Dogs are good at hiding pain, so owners often only notice when it is quite advanced. Many Irish dog owners then ask whether they can give CBD oil. This guide explains how to spot pain in your dog, what your vet can do, which human medicines are dangerous for dogs, and an honest look at where CBD fits.
Signs your dog may be in pain
- Limping, stiffness, or reluctance to jump into the car or onto the sofa.
- Slowing down on walks or lagging behind.
- Difficulty getting up, especially after rest.
- Licking or chewing at one area.
- Changes in behaviour: hiding, irritability, growling when touched.
- Panting or restlessness at rest, or trouble settling at night.
- Changes in posture, such as a hunched back or holding a leg up.
- Reduced appetite or interest in play.
Vets sometimes use simple questionnaires to track chronic pain at home. Ask your vet about one; scoring your dog every week makes changes easier to see.
Never give human painkillers to dogs
Ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin and paracetamol can seriously harm dogs, causing stomach ulcers, kidney failure or liver damage, even at doses that seem small. Never give your dog a human painkiller unless your vet specifically tells you to. If your dog has eaten human medicine, contact your vet or an emergency vet immediately.
What your vet can do
Your vet will examine your dog, find the source of pain and suggest treatment, which may include licensed veterinary pain relief, weight management, physiotherapy or hydrotherapy, and changes at home. For osteoarthritis, newer treatments such as monthly injections are available for some dogs. Pain relief is safer and more effective when it is matched to the cause, and your vet will monitor for side effects, sometimes with blood tests.
When it is urgent
Contact your vet immediately if your dog cannot stand or walk, cries out when touched, has a swollen or hard abdomen, is retching without producing anything (a possible sign of bloat), has been hit by a car, or has eaten something toxic.
Can you give a dog CBD oil for pain?
A small number of studies in dogs with osteoarthritis have reported some improvement in mobility scores, while others found little difference from placebo; studies are small and short. Some studies also found raised liver enzymes in dogs given CBD. If you and your vet decide to try a pet CBD product, follow the steps below. Our main guide covers this in detail: CBD oil for dogs in Ireland.
Helping a dog in pain at home
- A thick, supportive bed away from draughts.
- Non-slip rugs on wooden or tiled floors.
- Ramps or steps for the car and sofa.
- Shorter, more frequent walks on soft ground.
- Keeping your dog at a healthy weight.
- Raised food and water bowls for some older dogs.
Costs of vet care
Vet bills can be a worry. Pet insurance taken out while your dog is young and healthy helps with long-term conditions. Some vet practices offer health plans that spread the cost of routine care. If money is tight, talk to your vet openly; there are often several treatment options at different price points, and charities such as the DSPCA and ISPCA may be able to advise.
What the law in Ireland says about pet CBD
Pet CBD products can be sold in Ireland as general supplements if they contain no THC and make no medical claims. Anything claiming to treat pain in dogs would be a veterinary medicine, and veterinary medicines need authorisation from the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA). There is currently no authorised CBD veterinary medicine in Ireland, so no CBD product can legally claim to treat pain in dogs.
If you and your vet decide to try CBD
- Talk to your vet first, especially if your dog takes any medicine; CBD can affect how some drugs are processed.
- Use a product made for pets, with dosing guidance by body weight.
- Check the lab report: batch number matching the bottle and THC not detected. THC is toxic to dogs.
- Start at the lowest suggested amount and keep it steady for a week or two.
- Watch for side effects such as drowsiness, loose stools, increased thirst or wobbliness, and stop if they occur.
- Keep the vet treatment plan going. CBD should never replace prescribed pain relief.
Safety reminders
- Never give dogs human gummies or sweets; xylitol, a sweetener in some products, is extremely toxic to dogs.
- Never give human painkillers unless your vet prescribes them.
- Store all CBD products where your dog cannot reach them.
- Cats process many substances differently from dogs; use only products made for cats and ask your vet.
Our position
BDI.ie is run by the team behind Dr. Hemp Me, which sells a THC-free pet CBD oil. We do not claim it treats pain in dogs. Your vet is the right person to diagnose and treat your dog, and any CBD routine should be agreed with them.
Keep a simple diary
Whatever you try for pain in dogs, note each day how far your dog walked, how easily they got up, their appetite, sleep and mood, and any medicines or supplements given. After a few weeks, review it with your vet. Small changes are much easier to spot on paper than from memory.
Weight: the biggest thing you can change
Extra weight puts more load on painful joints and is linked to shorter, less comfortable lives in dogs. Studies in Labradors found that dogs kept lean lived around two years longer and developed arthritis later. Ask your vet for your dog’s ideal weight and body condition score, measure food rather than guessing, count treats as part of the daily allowance, and swap some treats for pieces of carrot or green beans. Weigh your dog every few weeks at the vet clinic.
The right kind of exercise
Dogs with painful joints still need exercise, but the type matters. Several shorter, steady walks on grass or soft paths are better than one long walk or bursts of ball-chasing, which involve sudden stops and twists. Swimming and hydrotherapy are excellent low-impact options; some Irish vet practices and rehabilitation centres offer hydrotherapy. Avoid long runs alongside bikes and repeated jumping in and out of cars. On colder Irish days, a short warm-up walk before letting your dog run helps stiff joints loosen.
Pain in young dogs
Pain is not only a problem for older dogs. Young, growing dogs can have joint conditions such as hip or elbow dysplasia, and active dogs of any age can injure ligaments, especially the cruciate ligament in the knee. A young dog that limps for more than a day or two, bunny-hops with both back legs, or seems reluctant to play should be checked by a vet. Early diagnosis can make a big difference to long-term comfort.
Questions to ask your vet
- What is causing my dog’s pain?
- What treatment options are there, and what do they cost?
- Are there side effects I should watch for?
- Would physiotherapy or hydrotherapy help?
- Is it safe to try a pet CBD product alongside this treatment?
Most dogs in pain can be helped a great deal. The sooner you spot the signs and talk to your vet, the more comfortable your dog’s life can be, and the more options you will have.
If you are ever unsure whether your dog is in pain, a quick check with your vet is always worthwhile.
