Two of the thirteen participants at the workshop

Thirteen second level students from schools around Ireland recently completed a biomedical diagnostics module as part of the "Summer Scholars" programme, run by Dublin City University.

The Summer Scholars programme, provides students an opportunity to  trial-run a real university course, meet new people from schools around the country and engage in interesting recreational activities on the DCU campus.

The students participating in the biomedical course ranged in age from 12 - 14 and they all named science as their favorite subject at school. The "hands-on" biomedical workshop enabled students to explore diverse topics such as DNA, Smart Materials, Light & fluoresence and electronics. The workshop was hosted by the BDI Education & Outreach team at the BDI's Education laboratory.

The students recorded their experience through blog posts which proved a valuable evaluation tool for the Education & Outreach team. Feedback from the students was very positive with one of the student commenting, "These two weeks showed me more than school ever could".
