Under the microscope - BDI research showcased during Innovation Dublin 2009

HEART SMART - INNOVATION DUBLIN PUBLIC TALK

10.09

Pioneering research taking place at the BDI was showcased at a recent public talk as part of Innovation Dublin 2009. Heart Smart introduced the audience to the Institute’s innovative research in the fight against heart disease.

Prof. Dermot Kenny of the Royal College of Surgeons and Prof. Brian MacCraith spoke of the problems posed by cardiac and blood clotting disorders and the BDI’s efforts to combat them. One such example is a small chip, about the size of a stick of chewing gum that can identify the presence of “red flags” in a droplet of blood, indicating a person’s risk of developing heart disease.

A demonstration of one of these chips in action was provided by Nigel Kent.

The event took place on Thursday 15th October in the Axis Theatre, a busy arts and community development centre at the heart of Ballymun.
